Softcover was founded in 1991 and is based in Cambridge, England, a region of British excellence in science and technology.

Softcover began selling scanners in late 2004 when the Colortrac SmartLF 4080 was released. The SmartLF 4080 was a perfect partner for our core product, Scan2CAD. Not only was it an ideal scanner for the types of document that our Scan2CAD users were scanning, but it was the first scanner priced at a level that many of our users could justify. Like Scan2CAD, it was great value for money.

Our involvement with Colortrac scanners caused us to take notice of the wider scanner market. We were surprised at the extent of the misinformation and low sales tactics we encountered. We thought it necessary to counter some of these practices and so Scanners4CAD was born.

At the end of May 2007, after being offered UK agencies by four large format scanner suppliers as a result of the Scanners4CAD web site, Softcover made the decision to stop selling wide format scanners. Our core business has always been software and we decided we simply didn't want to make the lifestyle changes that becoming a major large format scanner distributor would have entailed.

Everything we have learned about large format scanners in the years since we bought our first scanner is presented here along with large format scanner news and articles both by ourselves and by other scanner industry commentators. Our aim with this web site is to be a repository for large format scanner information as well as to show Scan2CAD and other CAD users how to ignore the bull and buy the scanner that's best for them.
