Scanning in Black and White

Scanning in black and white is what most CAD users will do most of the time.

The most useful settings when scanning in black and white are threshold settings. ScanWorks has two threshold settings, Fixed and Iat (which stands for Intelligent Adaptive Thresholding).

The Fixed Threshold is a simple threshold, i.e. parts of an image darker than the threshold value are set to black (foreground), and parts of the image lighter than the threshold value are set to white (background). The Fixed Threshold option is for scanning clean drawings with good foreground / background differentiation.

The Iat setting is an adaptive threshold, i.e. the threshold is automatically altered in response to the drawing's local foreground / background darkness. The Iat option is for scanning drawings with poor foreground / background differentiation, i.e. dirty, faded, stained or folded ones.

Below is a dirty test drawing along with the black and white scan created using ScanWorks' Iat. Compared to the other scanner software reviewed to date, ScanWorks produced the cleanest black and white scan of this drawing. (Note that this is only one test drawing - results may differ on other drawings.)
