NO BULL: Scan Speed Part 2

Contex define large format scanner productivity in "drawings per hour"

A cautionary tale from China

In confusing scan speed with productivity, Contex has reminded me of a tale heard recently.

A Chinese company became the proud owner of new wide format scanners. The company was new to scanning and naive in matters of scanned image quality. Labour being cheap in China, the company employed a gang of operators to push large format documents through their scanners as quickly as they could. This might sound ridiculous but only after making several hundred scans did they check on the results they were getting. Unsurprisingly, the image quality was awful.

The Chinese company was forced to ditch the majority of its scans and start again, slower this time, paying more attention to individual drawing detail and the controls in scanning software which must be used in order to create a useful result. If we use Contex's new speed rating, the Chinese company was productive all the time while it was banging out unusable scans. Our view is that the Chinese company only became productive once it began to scan each drawing with consideration and attention to individual detail and get a useful result.

In scanning more haste means less speed!
