GREEN SCANNING:
... Continued. [Previous page] [Next page]
Sadly, the answer to that question is often.... "only if there is something in it for me!" We think that CAD users should care a lot!!!
CAD users should care about how things are made because that is their job! Every CAD expense made at work should come after some reflection about the best envirionmental choice given the impact of your decision to buy new technology. For example, should you buy an Image Access large format scanner with true Energy Star compliance or a non-compliant "Energy Saver" scanner from Contex?
In the recent Issue #552 of Ralph Grabowski's excellent CAD eZine, there is a brief article entitled "Orange More Important Than Green". "The only reason some people might care about green .... is to make money from it. Or to save money. Otherwise, it's a non-issue for most of the population", says Grabowski, who asks "if green is unimportant to most people, then what is?"
"To learn the answer", says Grabowski, "fly over your city, any city, late at night -- after doubling the cost of your airfare by paying carbon-offsets to someone to run an organization that might pay someone else to plant some trees that you can't be bothered planting yourself. ...(observe) all those streetlights illuminating sparsely-traveled roads. (When I see the thousands, millions of streetlight bulbs glowing orange, it makes me want to become a lightbulb manufacturer.) There is your answer: Security is more important than green".
If Grabowski is correct that most people / CAD users care less about green issues than their own security, then wide format scanner manufacturers need to take the initiative and lead the sheep - CAD and large format scanner users - to greener pastures. The problem, of course, is that large format scanner manufacturers are committed to sales and profits. Being green comes last. They also ask "what's in it for me?"
The good news is that there is a lot "in it" for wide format scanner manufacturers, indeed all manufacturers, who go green. They can save money by implementing IS0 14001. It means that those indifferent to the fate of our planet will be dragged along by those wanting to profit from green scanning.
