The RoHS Directive

Another valuable piece of legislation is the RoHS Directive, "the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment", which was was adopted in February 2003 by the European Union.

The RoHS Directive bans the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.

The EU is much criticised for overly zealous, petty law-making. RoHS is one of the EU's better laws. It takes Friends of the Earth's maxim - "think locally, act globally" - and transforms this into useful legislation which forces non-EU manufacturers who want to sell their goods in Europe (and elsewhere) to comply with European environmental requirements. Manufacturers in America, China, Japan and elsewhere now need to meet these RoHS requirements to ensure that their products and components comply with EU law. This is good for Europe and the world.

Which large format scanner manufacturers are RoHS compliant?

All large format scanner manufacturers and suppliers selling into the EU have to comply.
