The WEEE Man.
Oops ... perhaps not ...
The real WEEE Man!
The RSA (Royal Society for
the encouragement of Arts,
Manufactures & Commerce)
WEEE Man is an imposing seven
metre high figure composed of
three tonnes of WEEE. This
represents the total amount of
electronic waste that an average
person in the UK is likely to
consume in their lifetime.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) is another piece of EU legislation which, together with the RoHS Directive, became European law in February 2003, setting collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods. It imposes responsibility for the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) on the manufacturers.
The WEEE Directive requires manufacturers to establish an infrastructure for collecting WEEE. Manufacturers must then dispose of the collected WEEE in an environmentally friendly and responsible way, either by ecological disposal or by reuse / refurbishment. Manufacturers are also responsible for financing most of these activities - for example private householders must be able to return WEEE without charge.
WEEE is an excellent idea which other countries like the USA could benefit from also.
