WATCHDOG:

Can Widecom re-invent itself?

Continued.... Widecom Wide Format Scanners - [Previous]

Conclusion

Websites are intended to draw attention to a company and its products. Widecom's website draws attention to the fact that the company's products are out-of-date. In this regard, Widecom is its own worst enemy. Widecom's indifference to updating its website and providing the buyer with accurate, up-to-date information shows it in a bad light.

Among the misleading things which Widecom's website claims is that its scanners cost less and are significantly faster. Readers should be aware that they are also the OLDEST. Anyone buying a Widecom scanner today is advised that the critical issue is not their price and speed but whether they are adequately supported. If something goes wrong, how quickly can it be fixed and can this be done on site?

Without a new Widecom wide format scanner we must warn buyers of Widecom's claims and advise that on current specifications its products while not unusable are increasingly uncompetitive. Widecom does not have impossibly far to go to get its vision back on track and become competitive once more. By updating to a more modern specification with USB 2.0 support, a new Widecom scanner sold at an attractive price with appropriate support stands a reasonable second chance of success in the CAD market.

The market for affordable large format scanners has grown enormously since 2000. This presents Widecom with a good but difficult opportunity. Widecom can reinvent itself if it has the desire to do so. Its first step is to recognise the need to edit its website.
