Image Access to present the world’s first wide format duplex scanner and the technology hit Bookeye 4.

Image Access, the specialty scanner manufacturer based in Wuppertal, Germany, will present its extended family of high performance wide format and planetary scanners at CeBIT 2010 in Hannover (Hall 3, Booth E20).

Highlights at this year’s show will include the world’s first wide format duplex scanner, the WideTEK 36 DS, and the innovative book scanner, the Bookeye 4 which was developed particularly with the self-service application market in mind.

With the latest member of the Bookeye family, Image Access placed an emphasis on developing a scanner which is compact, easy to operate and competitively priced; to bring high end professional scanning to an even larger population of users. The efficient Bookeye 4 digitizes source material such as bound documents at high speeds in up to 600 dpi optical resolution and formats up to DIN A2.

Over 17 years of electronic, optical and mechanical engineering experience went into the creation and manufacture of the Bookeye 4. The clever mirror mechanism captures the document precisely from edge to edge, whether it is a flat document or a book open at an angle of 120 degrees. The V-shaped book cradle was optimized to reduce the risk of damage to book spines and binding during digitization. The book cradle holds the open book at an angle of 120 degrees; enough to effectively scan the contents of a page, while gently preserving the original subject matter.

Book scanning made easy

Bookeye 4 has all the advantages of a more expensive standalone device. Outfitted with an integrated color touchscreen and monitor, Bookeye 4 can reach unrivaled scanning speeds and process large volumes of data independent of any external peripheral devices – a typical feature of all Image Access scanners.

The Bookeye is Technology Hit!

It takes approximately three seconds for the Bookeye 4 to capture and process the images of two pages of a DIN A3 sized book scanned at 200 dpi optical resolution. Once the image is on the screen, modifications can be made to scan parameters such as brightness, color or contrast without having to rescan. Users operate the system intuitively, guided by clear and well structured menu commands on the touchscreen. Scanned images can be saved to a USB flash drive, printed on a connected or network printer, uploaded to an FTP Server or even sent via eMail.

Bookeye 4’s solid functionality, innovative features and competitive pricing make it an ideal book copier for large groups of users; for example, in an university library. The advantage of a Bookeye 4 over a normal copier is the protective handling of the subject matter to be scanned and the immediate availability of the resulting images to a wider audience. Distribution of the scanned material can be virtually paper free – an ecological argument for Bookeye 4.

Rudiger Klepsch, COO of Image Access, is convinced: "The new Bookeye 4 will revolutionize the book scanning world. While these types of systems may have been considered too expensive or hard to handle for self-service areas in universities and other libraries in the past, the Bookeye 4 was developed with exactly this group of users in mind. The color touchscreen and easy to follow menus combined with the speed of the system make it a real technological hit. Exactly what would be expected in a modern library environment."

WideTEK 36 DS – the world’s first wide format duplex scanner
Scan twice as much in half the time

How can you scan twice as much in half the time and still have brilliant results? By scanning both sides of a document simultaneously!

WideTEK 36 DS (Duplex Scanner)
Image Access World First!
The WideTEK 36 DS (Duplex Scanner)

It is now possible to scan both sides of a full sized newspaper, separate the results into four separate images (front and back, left and right sides) in three seconds and all in one single step. Two complete CCD camera systems capture the document on both sides with a single pass, while the powerful onboard Linux system formats and compresses the data before sending the images to the output media. The document no longer needs to be flipped over and scanned again on the other side. The result is double the scanning productivity – not only in archives, libraries and press clipping services but for any application where double sided subject matter is being scanned.

By integrating more extensive mechanics and additional camera and light units into the device without enlarging its dimensions, it was possible to manufacture a device only 13 centimeters larger than the already very compact WideTEK 36.

All of the other proven technologies found in Image Access WideTEK scanners are also present in the WideTEK 36 DS. The scanner is based on the patented Scan2Net technological platform, making it operating system independent.

At the heart of the device is the unique camera and illumination system, outfitted with high quality CCD cameras and long-lasting LED lights. The patented stitching procedure and the optical resolution of 1200 x 600 dpi guarantee uncompromised scan results. Illumination with white LEDs is exceptionally energy-saving and delivers a constant color temperature over the entire lifetime of 50,000 hours. The scanner can be installed in a matter of minutes and is ready for operation immediately after powering it on. The low number of consumables makes the product practically maintenance free.

From newspapers to drawings – in formats up to DIN A0
A WideTEK scanner is the ideal solution for professional digitization

Scale your wide format scanner investment to the application. The WideTEK family of scanners has a solution for any wide format application

  • WideTEK 25 – Flatbed scanner for formats up to DIN A2
  • WideTEK 36 – Sheet feed scanner for documents up to 36 inch width
  • WideTEK 42 – Sheet feed scanner for documents up to 42 inch width
  • WideTEK 48 – Sheet feed scanner for documents up to 48 inch width

In addition to the benefits of the Scan2Net technology, the integrated touchscreen on each of the scanners makes it possible to use the device for walk-up scanning applications, without requiring a connected client PC. This makes the WideTEK family of scanners the perfect solution for professional and commercial imaging applications.

High Speed Page Turning During Scanning

It always draws a crowd! The fully automatic book scanner ScanRobot, manufactured by Treventus Mechatronics from Vienna, Austria; is such an innovative product, that show visitors can’t seem to drag themselves away from this device when it is in operation.

Automatic page turning
with ScanRobot

ScanRobot automatically turns the pages of a book while scanning, enabling a high throughput in digitization of books and other bound documents. The award winning and patented scan system was developed for high production scanning delivering crisp, undistorted results up to the book fold. The operator lays a book in the cradle and starts the scanner – ScanRobot takes care of the rest. The scanner turns and scans up to 2,500 pages per hour. ScanRobots are installed in numerous notable institutions; national libraries, state archives and other well-known scientific organizations.
